HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLIPSIDE!

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock recently (where have you been?!), you’ll all know that we are celebrating 10 Years of Flipside and have done so with a bang! Mr Parsley has brought us his 24 hour broadcast, and we’ve been delving into the archives and playing previous shows. Here at Flipside Radio, we couldn’t do what we do without our amazing presenters and wonderful listeners, so how else better way to celebrate #10YearsofFlipside than getting some of these fabulous people’s stories about what Flipside means to them?

For me my favourite things about it are all the wonderful people I’ve come to meet since I joined the team in July 2016. I was first interviewed by Matt Poynton about my blog, and a year and a half later I can safely say that my highlight of 2017 has been dancing round the studio to Niall Horan’s ‘Slow Hands’ with Matt and discussing Ru Paul’s Drag Race. When I joined Flipside I got involved with running the social media and website, and through it I also got involved with the incredible online magazines, Soundsphere and We Are Chester. Flipside not only became a hobby and a key part of my social life that I loved, but it also helped me gain more skills that I could put on my CV and utilise for a career. I can’t thank everyone enough who’s got involved with my Twitter spam and of course everyone who’s listened to me play The 1975 every week, here’s to the best place in the world!

Mr Parsley, presenter: ‘I first got involved with Flipside in the spring of 2016. I had been looking for some focus in my life outside of work and home, and a guest appearance on the Ear Of The Tiger show led me to getting stuck in with my own show, Parsley’s Playlist. There have been 70 Playlists now and I love putting in the time to make a show that will really interest our amazing listeners. On Wednesdays I now present the Flipside Weekly with my utterly brilliant co-host Rach A Rama – every week we meet new people involved with community groups, non profits, independent businesses, tourist attractions and charities. And we’re lucky enough to regularly showcase the very best local musicians, too. The Weekly has shown me what an amazing, busy and progressive city we live in; it’s all too easy to sit at home and snipe from the sidelines, but when you get out there and see what’s going on around us you can’t help but feel impressed. Flipside brings great people together and I hope that the first 10 years are the perfect warm up for the next 10!

Anni Murf, regular listener: I first started listening to Flipside when the (much missed) Ear of the Tiger was on, from there I was introduced to Mr Parsley and his amazing knowledge of music. He then went on to have his own show with Tori Erskine. They both have their own shows now, Mr Parsley with Rach A Rama and Tori Erskine has guest presenters, usually We Are Chester. From these shows I have made new friends, worldwide and its made me realise I don't seem to go out much on a Wednesday and Thursday! Love the chat, guests and music, long may it continue. #FlipsideRulesTheAirways

Memphis Tom, regular listener: I’ve been listening to Flipside ever since Mr Parsley started his weekly playlist. I’m not quite sure how I discovered his show and the station, to be honest, but it l’m sure it was through someone who I started following on Twitter. As that list of Chester related followers grew I pretty much fell in love with Chester (what’s not to love). Two distinct memories involved visiting Chester last July and meeting several Twitter friends of the station and also doing my own show along with Mr Parsley. Another visit occurred a few weeks ago and a few more are planned. Hopefully I will do another show with Mr P in the Spring. Flipside Weekly has introduced me to many of the city’s happenings and Mr P and Rach do a terrific job in showcasing what is going on. As my Twitter profile includes: I am a virtual resident of Chester. I’ll keep coming back for more.

Angela Ferguson, Presenter: I have met so many lovely people through Flipside. It really has made a difference to my life. I absolutely love coming into the studios to catch up with the team and to co-host the We Are Chester show with Tori and James. It’s something I really look forward to. Happy Birthday Flipside! Here’s to many more years of broadcasting. Flipside is such an asset to Chester, raising awareness of good causes and local heroes. It also does such a good job of offering volunteers from all walks of life the chance to work in radio, whether behind the scenes or presenting a multitude of shows.

This weekend saw Mr Parsley host #24HoursofParsley where he ran a 24 hour broadcast to raise money for Chester Women’s Aid and Lache Community Development Trust. The studio was flooded with wonderful guests and presenters including Rach A Rama, JJ, The Daymons, We Are Chester, Deva Tuk Tuk… I could literally be here all day listing them! Here at Flipside we would love to give a big thank you to all our guests and everyone who helped support and promote the event. Of course, we also need to give a HUGE thank you to Mr Parsley for hosting this unbelievable show!

We also want to thank everyone who has supported us over the last ten years, whether a volunteer, listener, Twitter follower, thank you so much!

Flipside celebrating ten years of connecting with the community

On 8th December co-presenter of the popular Flipside Weekly program Mr Parsley will be going live for 24 hours and will be using the opportunity to support two Chester based charities, Chester Women’s Aid who supports families experiencing domestic abuse and also raise awareness around the issue. The second charity is Lache Community Development Trust which as well as coordinating Flipside radio the charity also provides services locally for the disadvantaged area of Lache.

Flipside radio began in 2007 known as Lache FM. Originally a community project that focused on giving residents of Lache the opportunity to develop media skills and present their own shows, in 2015 the project grew to have a city-wide interest and the decision was made to change the name to Flipside Radio however still broadcast loud and proud from Lache. Long-time member of the production team Su Johnstone reflects on her time with the station

it has been great to see the station develop over the years and even better to see what the former and current volunteer presenters have achieved in their personal and professional lives, we have had many people come in and develop skills that have helped them move forward in their careers”

The 24-hour broadcast will take place on December 8th at 6pm and will include an eclectic mix of guests from musicians, charity organisations and possible celebrities. In the run up to Mr Parsley’s #24hoursofparsley Tori Erskine will be going live at 5pm-6pm with a special edition of “what’s the stori”
